Participants will be more aware of the effect that different cultural norms have, ranging from simple meeting and greeting to how business is negotiated and how formal occasions are arranged and conducted.  Participants can expect to become more effective and confident in their cross cultural engagements.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

This workshop would assist staff in becoming aware of and understanding cultural differences when hosting or visiting institutional representatives and other international guests.

The session would look at cultural differences involved when on overseas visits including expectations in behaviour when doing business. The session would cover protocol issues when hosting guests from other countries, including international government officials and institutional representatives.  It would look at the ways in which business is conducted and negotiations are made.  Consideration will also be given to the idea of ‘cultural intelligence’ which is of particular relevance in the context of international relations.

That is, who to introduce first, how to refer to people, how to behave in a meal situation, what to expect, gift giving and the conduct of formal meetings and the negotiation of business matters.

The session will focus on China, India and the Middle East. Participants will have the opportunity to raise issues re other countries.

WORKSHOP MODE:
There will be short presentations re the three main areas in terms of general principles and expectations in cultural interactions. Much of the Workshop will be practical in nature with case studies, role plays and scenarios.
