Sponsors and sponsored students play an important role in the international education sector. Effective management of the relevant relationships is crucial to the success of these specialised student cohorts.
The Sponsored Students SIG provides a network for sharing ideas and developing the specialised skills of international education practitioners who work with sponsors and sponsored students.
Membership is open to IEAA members and non-members.
The Sponsored Students SIG aims to:
- Provide a networking and information sharing group to discuss scholarship management, strategy and marketing.
- Recognise and develop the specialised skills in managing the myriad stakeholders involved in sponsored student management through professional development activities.
- Provide a resource and information source for staff working with sponsors and sponsored students.
Anna Kent, Convener
Anna Kent is an Adviser, International Education at Austrade. She has worked in various areas of international education and international development, including TNE and scholarship management. She was previously International Scholarships Manager at Victoria University and has a master degree looking at the role of scholarships in international development. She is currently undertaking her PhD at Deakin University.
Gina Abarquez, Deputy Convener
Gina has more than 20 years experience in international education. Her most recent role was managing the Sponsored Students Office for the Australian National University. In this role, she provided personalised support to over 400 Australia Awards scholars and ensured effective interaction with DFAT and managing contractors.
Amy Wan, Deputy Convener
Amy has been working in student admin for about 10 years, including with the Australia Awards and Endeavour Scholarships. Her portfolio has recently expanded to include sponsored students at the University of Sydney. In 2007, Amy was appointed as one of AusAID’s Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development and became involved in helping a grassroots organisation with empowering women from impoverished communities in Indonesia.
