This webinar is an initiative of IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group and is part of a webinar series for prospective and current emerging researchers in international education. 

This webinar will be chaired by Associate Professor Amanda Daly and explores connecting with your prospective research supervisor. From making your initial approach to establishing a productive working relationship, this webinar provides tips and strategies for emerging researchers to navigate student-supervisor communication. Amanda will be joined by two IEAA Research Committee Members: Dr Helen Yang from Latrobe University and Professor Catherine Gomes from RMIT University.

This webinar is open to IEAA Members and non-members and is free of charge. We encourage you to share this information with peers and colleagues who are emerging international education researchers. 

Audience

This webinar is relevant to current research students (PhD / Masters / Honours) who are working on a topic relevant to international education. We also welcome international education researcher-practitioners and others who are curious about international education research. 

Outcomes

Webinar participants will:

  • Hear from three established researchers who are based in Australian universities and have current experience in supervising research students working on topics related to international education.

  • Learn strategies for making the first step in approaching a prospective research supervisor in the field of international education and understand supervisor perspectives. 

  • Learn more about IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group and planned future activities.

A/Prof Amanda Daly, IEAA-SF 

Director (EmpowerED) 

Griffith University 

Amanda is Academic Director, EmpowerED University Preparation Program at Griffith University. Previously, she was the Deputy Dean of Learning & Teaching at Griffith Business School, where she led various initiatives to enhance student retention and satisfaction. Amanda has received multiple awards, including the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Over the last 20 years, Amanda has worked within education as an administrator, university educator and researcher, with a specific focus on international students and student mobility. She also has a wealth of experience as an academic and curriculum developer driving the internationalisation of the curriculum and enhancing the student experience. Amanda is the inaugural Chair of IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group, which is a sub-committee of the Research Committee.

Prof Catherine Gomes, IEAA-SF 

Professor, School of Media and Communications 

RMIT University 

Catherine is a Professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University. She is an ethnographer who is internationally known for her work in three interrelated areas: a) communication, culture and identity; b) international student wellbeing; and c) transient migrant(ions). Catherine is an Asia-Pacific specialist, with Australia and Singapore being significant fieldwork sites. Her current work on Singapore covers food heritage and platform economies.

Dr Helen Yang, IEAA-SF 

Associate Dean for Academic Partnership, La Trobe Business School 

La Trobe University 

Dr Helen Yang is a member of IEAA’s Research Committee and a Associate Dean for Academic Partnerships at La Trobe Business School, is passionate about international education and has expertise in accounting and higher education. A CPA and Senior Fellow of both Advance HE (UK) and IEAA, she leads strategic initiatives in research-informed curriculum development, transnational education and teaching quality enhancement. Helen actively contributes to shaping international student admission policies, ensuring equitable academic performance standards and strengthening global engagement in academic partnerships. Dr Yang completed her schooling and undergraduate education in China, holds a PhD from Victoria University in Australia and has also completed two masters degrees: an MBA (Accounting) from Victoria University and a Master of Education from the University of Melbourne. As a member of CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Dr Yang actively engages with industry and the accounting profession.
